Control Society By Gilles Deleuze
Gilles Deleuze’s idea of the “control society,” most clearly articulated in his short but influential text Postscript on the Societies of Control, marks a shift from older forms of power analyzed by Michel Foucault as “disciplinary societies” toward a more fluid, continuous, and decentralized mode of control that operates through networks rather than enclosed institutions. While disciplinary societies were structured around bounded spaces such as schools, factories, prisons, and hospitals where individuals moved from one enclosure to another under surveillance and normalization, #Deleuze argues that contemporary societies no longer rely primarily on these fixed sites; instead, control is exercised through continuous modulation, where power is flexible, adaptive, and embedded in everyday life through technologies, codes, and systems of access. In control societies, individuals are no longer simply “subjects” confined within institutions but become “dividuals,” fragmented into data points, passwords, and digital traces that can be tracked, analyzed, and managed across platforms such as corporations, financial systems, and digital networks. This transformation is closely tied to the rise of late capitalism, where markets, rather than institutions, become the primary sites of regulation, and where control is exerted through mechanisms like credit systems, performance metrics, and algorithmic governance rather than overt coercion. Unlike discipline, which operates through fixed rules and visible hierarchies, control functions through continuous variation and invisible modulation, making it more pervasive and harder to resist because it appears as freedom, flexibility, and mobility. Deleuze’s concept thus highlights how power in contemporary society is no longer about confining bodies but about shaping flows of information, capital, and desir thereby producing a form of governance that is diffuse, internalized, and deeply integrated into the rhythms of everyday life.
